Windmills originated in Persia around 500–900 CE as vertical-axis machines with woven-reed sails for grinding grain and pumping water. The technology spread to Europe by the 12th century, evolving into horizontal-axis, rotating post mills. Dutch innovation in the 16th-17th centuries revolutionised land reclamation, while American settlers later popularised multi-bladed, steel-wind pumps, leading to modern wind turbines.
