This was a rather barbaric form of execution used by the Spanish Inquisition around 1808-1809, dramatised by Edgar Allen Poe in his novel by the same name, and later a Hollywood blockbuster film in 1961 starring Vincent Price. The premise was that the victim was bound to a wooden bed in a pit in the dungeon, and a huge curved axe swung back & forth, slowly being lowered to slice the victim in half.
