First described in India in 1000 BC, the tonsillectomy procedure gained popularity in the 1800s, when a partial tonsillectomy was performed. Because part of the tonsil was left behind, it frequently became hypertrophied and caused recurrence of the obstruction.


The Tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure in which both palatine tonsils are fully removed from the back of the throat. The procedure is mainly performed for recurrent throat infections and obstructive sleep apnea.


Physick’s original “tonsil guillotine” used a razor blade to compress the tonsil and cut it from front to back. The tonsillotome required no other instruments and considerably less skill than a scalpel and forceps. In fact, a doctor could perform a tonsillotomy with one hand and no assistant.


Unpowered bone cutting implements include a variety of hacksaws and sabre saws. In many applications, the saw is used in specialised jigs to provide accurate, measurable cuts, e.g. in knee surgery.
